PreSchool-Grade 4. The animals of Brer Village are doing just fine until Boss Lion moves in and starts eating everyone in sight. After a few days, the folks get together to do something about it, and fast-talking Brer Rabbit volunteers to take on the carnivore. His bravado fails him when he is faced with the beast, and the villagers end up providing Boss Lion with fresh meat?literally. When it's Brer Rabbit's turn to become a part of the lion's diet, the wily hare uses the brute's worst traits as a weapon against him. Kessler's narrative is packed with humorous wordplay and written in a rolling, storytelling style. Mayer's bright, cartoon illustrations capture the mood of the story, depicting the sassy Brer Rabbit particularly well?this is a bunny with attitude. The tale reads well alone, but Danny Glover's taped interpretation, backed by brash and brassy music by Dr. John, enhances the experience immeasurably.
