Creating Alternative Realities at Work: The Quality of Work Life Experiment at FoodCom. In the 1970s, in order to respond to changing worker demographics and attitudes, experiments were set up to develop new methods of labor-management cooperation by creating joint labor-management committees that would work together to solve common problems without bringing them to the often adversarial management-union bargaining table. These Quality of Work Life (QWL) experiments took place in organizations as diverse as a coal mining facility, a pharmaceutical company, and a hospital. This volume takes a close look at the QWL experiment in the bakery division of a large food product manufacturer, FoodCom.
