A seven percent solution may have been the least of Sherlock Holmes s problems. Wine, beer and spirits are all mentioned in the Sherlock Holmes Stories of Arthur Conan Doyle. The author has examined which specific drinks are in the tales, but has amplified this into a study of Victorian drinking habits with a wealth of information about the best vintages, Scotch, Irish and American whiskies, the Victorian cellar, drinking songs and brief historical sketches of some of the most popular drinks at the turn of the century. There are amusing sidelights on the Victorians in general and on various characters in the Canon in particular.
