All Max really wants to do is practice his juggling, drink iced tea with his friends, and get over the death of his wife in a car wreck. He has no intention whatsoever of going back to being a detective. But a sharp-tongued policeman from his past, a seductive woman who resembles an ancient Near Eastern princess, and a fire-happy thug have other ideas.
Max has to come to terms with his darkest dreams and the possibility of new love as he explores familiar haunts in and around San Francisco. With the help of an eccentric friend who would be at home in Alice’s Wonderland, a reclusive bibliophile neighbor, and a gun-savvy, Bible-quoting waitress, he pulls off a real-life feat of illusion that saves his own life.

FRED ROUTT is a third-generation Californian. In September 1995, by the light of the full moon, he went fishing in San Francisco Bay and caught a Brazilian mermaid. They married on Leap Day 1996, and continue to live in the Bay Area.
"The door burst open, the frame splintering as the lock broke through the wood. The Torch stepped inside with his aerosol can lined up behind the flame of his lighter. I clicked the remote. Just as the net released, he looked up. A fireball whooshed into life. It hit the net and the strands melted. I pulled out the net gun and fired it. I dropped it on the desktop, grabbed a five-pounder in each hand, and ran over to him."
