The kids of Room 207 arrive at their class on the first day of school to find it has suffered “a most grievous accident” and is covered in mysterious slime. Their teacher leads her charges to the original one-room schoolhouse that stands on the property. But the schoolroom isn’t empty — it is inhabited by a spooky guest. The shock of being transferred to the worst classroom on the planet has barely worn off when Erik, the school’s biggest bully, and Stove, the world’s second fastest pot-bellied pig, are added to the attendance sheet.
The winner of this year’s Best Classroom contest will represent the school on a reality show, but what chance does Room 207 have to win when it is already nicknamed, “The Pigpen”? And how do you accept an award if your teacher has been swallowed by slime?
Room 207’s cast of hilarious characters includes a guinea pig named Butterbum, a cat who needed ten lives and nine kids desperate to prove themselves to the school and to the reality-tv viewing world.

Marnelle Tokio was born in St. Catharine’s, Ontario, on a frostbitten New Year’s Day, but grew up in Australia, Bahamas, Florida, and California. She has had so many jobs her resume is alphabetical from Apprentice Thoroughbred Jockey to X-ray Technician. While waiting to hear about a zookeeper position she decided to be a writer. More Than You Can Chew was her first book, and now she is an international award-winning author. Marnelle can often be found playing with her daughter, dog, and husband at their home in Toronto.
Grade 4-6–This novel has all of the right elements for an entertaining read: an eccentric, animal-loving teacher; a gang of wacky classmates; an unusual classroom environment; and some supernatural activity. The book, however, falls terribly short, relying on the children making the adults look stupid. Students use inappropriate language and humiliate their peers; authority figures are witless, humorless, and idiotic. The story takes place in an old-fashioned schoolhouse that shares property with a more modern school. When an accident wrecks a classroom, Ms. Chimney must set up in the old school. Then the beloved teacher goes missing in a cloud of exploding slime, and the children have to rescue her. The setting is rife with possibility that, unfortunately, remains unexplored. Even the resident ghost cat proves disappointing. Occasional cartoons, employing stick figures in black and white, do little to enrich the flat text.–Corrina Austin, Locke's Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada
