When Cuban artist Tonel applied to art school as a young man he was rejected, told that his drawings were too simple, too much like caricatures. He enrolled instead at the University of Havana, becoming a renowned scholar of culture and art history - but he never stopped making his cynical, keenly ironic two and three dimensional art. His pieces offer insight on the human condition to all of us, but their meaning in Cuba is particularly potent, showing useless limbs or a phallus lying limply on the ground, unable to fulfill its function. A rare look at the still mysterious island just 90 miles from Florida, guided by one of Cuba's leading artists and critics. This book is an Exhibition catalog, written in English and Spanish text, dimension: 8 x 101/2 inches, and includes 66 b&w and 26 color reproductions.
