Grade 2-4-As this beginning chapter book opens, it's the last day of fourth grade and Charlotte has just learned that the teacher she has adored for the past four years is moving and will be replaced by the awkward Miss Downing. Later that day, the girl rescues a small dog and convinces her parents to let her keep him. Charlotte names the dog ttuM since he only responds when he is spoken to backwards. The girl and her friend then begin the irritating practice of speaking to the dog, and sometimes each other, in reverse. Stopping to transpose the words may prove to be a bit difficult for some readers. Most of the action takes place at a summer cottage on a lake. Here, a mysterious person dressed in black is seen canoeing, the dog disappears, and the girls spot their new teacher in town. By the story's end, the girls learn that Miss Downing is allergic to the sun, and is the mysterious canoeist. She is also the temporary owner of ttuM and looking for a home for him. Each chapter opens with a black-and-white pencil drawing that depicts an upcoming event or scene. Additional full-page drawings are interspersed throughout the book. This light adventure/mystery with sufficiently fleshed-out characters moves along at a steady pace.
