Grade 2-5-This story chronicles the life of a young raccoon, beginning with his birth and following him as he matures and learns to live in the wild. Kit's sisters are killed-one by an owl and one by a car-leaving him the sole survivor of his litter. He also has his own close calls. However, there is a happy ending to this accurate portrait of animal life as Kit reaches adulthood and finds a mate. Anthropomorphizing is minimal, and the animals' behavior is realistic as Woods addresses both the habits of these creatures and the dangers they face in their encounters with humans and in the natural world. There is enough adventure to make this an exciting, interesting choice for independent readers; it will also be a good read-aloud selection for a younger audience. Black-and-white drawings sprinkled throughout add to the overall appeal. While not an essential purchase, this title will be enjoyed by nature enthusiasts.
