Synopsis
The phrase "by, for and about" has served as a basic tenet of cultural policy direction in feminism since the early 1970's. Like "the personal is political" or "global sisterhood" it has operated as a shorthand for certain kinds of thinking about feminist cultural politics. Unlike the other two, it continues to be used quite widely as a way of guiding practice and shaping our thinking about how women produce culture in feminism. The nineteen pieces in this volume deal with fine art, poetry, fiction, film and oral history. They talk about the underbelly of creation: the editorial processes, the support and disappontments of community.
