Rusty fights with her girlfriend, has wildly inventive sexual fantasies, lives with Multiple Sclerosis and sleeps a lot. Two Ends of Sleep is an idiosyncratic and often hilarious snapshot of urban lesbian life seen through Rusty's cynical eyes, where fantasy and reality blur.

Rusty is one tired lesbian. She thinks the fruitless organizing, infighting, and lack of progress that is all too familiar to burnt out activists has finally gotten to her. Only after several visits to doctors does she discover that she is not "just tired" but has multiple sclerosis. This amazingly funny novel describes the difficulty of a life lived between waking and dozing. The structure of the book alternates dreamy passages with tight realism. Author Lizard Jones, a member of the Kiss and Tell lesbian art collective, tells Rusty's story with humor and grace.
In her first novel, Canadian writer, visual artist, and performer Jones sets a surrealistic stage for her protagonist. Rusty has recently been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and she is sleeping almost around the clock, avoiding sex with her lover, Janet, and drifting in and out of enticing waking-sleeping dreams--scenarios of lust and fascination for Dee. Jones, herself diagnosed with MS in 1994, makes concrete the details of the disabling illness and pulls the reader into Rusty's hermetic world as she struggles within herself for focus and the spirit to once again participate in a larger world. Paradoxically, her fantasy fling with Dee causes her to inadvertently reenter the world of journalism in an effort to seem important and effective. Although Rusty is drawn to the blurred half-world between sleep and wakefulness, to "the moment when she knew the path before her was almost revealed," she finds something that resembles a pathway, after all. She used to be a writer and political activist, but overwhelmed by the fatigue of her illness, the lethargy of political disillusion, and self-pity, she now lives within the two ends of sleep: waking up, and dozing off.-Two Ends of Sleep charts her clear-eyed observations of the world around her, the depths of her passivity and the beginning of her idiosyncratic journey back. True, Rusty is cynical and sarcastic, but she is also determined to cope with her diagnosis on her own terms. Wildly inventive sexual fantasies and complicated lesbian entanglements are part of the remedy.-Simultaneously funny and serious, Two Ends of Sleep is a cleverly appealing and unsentimental narrative.".
