Brenda Riches was born in India in 1942 and moved to England when she was four years old. She received the major part of her formal education in Taunton, Somerset, and at the University of Cambridge. From 1965 to 1974, she taught English and imaginative writing in secondary schools in London and Liverpool. Liverpool was where she attended a monthly gathering of writers, musicians and artists called Jabberwocky, and found encouragement for her writing. In 1974, she came to Saskatchewan where she made contact with the Saskatoon poets. Thanks to their honest criticism, and to the Saskatchewan School of the Arts where she took a fiction class in 1976, and where she attended two writers' retreats, her writing developed well enough to be accepted by a number of Canadian literary magazines and anthologies. Her first book, Dry Media, was published by Turnstone Press in 1981. In that year she also became fiction editor of Grain literary magazine, a publication of the Saskatchewan Writers' Guild. She was editor-in-chief of Grain from 1983 to 1985.
