Develops a general model of asynchronous-transfer-mode switching systems that illuminates their relationship to network control in order to clarify the impact of signaling, operations and maintenance, network management, and traffic control on the design and performance of switching systems. ATM technology promises a whole new generation of telecommunications services, but the implementation has been slow because the requirements of networks using them have not been adequately studied.
