From School Library Journal

Grade 1-3-- This slim volume is essentially a series of recipes loosely connected by a modest story about Mrs. Marmalade, a possum who, after leaving her children behind, sets off to care for an ailing aunt. As Mrs. Marmalade progresses on her journey , she encounters various other animals and these incidents precipitate an occasion for noshing. Recipes, which an eight-year-old should be able to handle, accompany each episode. Unfortunately, there is a preponderance of sweets, with an overabundance of cake and cookie concoctions that are short on nutrition but heavy on calories. Krementz' The Fun of Cooking (Knopf, 1985) provides a better balance for young cooks. Nonetheless, the format is pleasant and the watercolor pictures depict an ingratiating Mrs. Marmalade. However, if she continues to rely solely on her own recipes, she will soon be forced to diet. --Phyllis G. Sidorsky, National Cathedral School, Washington, DC
