The first part of this book deals with the World War II siege of Corregidor and the prison camp years that followed in the Philippines and in the northern Chinese province of Manchuria. The rest chronicles the author's experiences and views on events and the changing face of journalism, politics, and government during critical stages of American history. The author describes it as "essentially a foot-soldier's view" of war and politics. The reader will be treated to intriguing insights into personalities and events that shaped and changed politics and government in this country and still influence it today. The author also reveals for the first time who masterminded the Texas veterans land scandal, a story that rocked the state, influenced its politics, sent the commissioner of the General Land Office to prison, and earned the author a Pulitzer Prize.

The first quarter of Towery's autobiography concerns his experiences in a Japanese POW camp during WWII, where as ``chow dipper,'' his job was to distribute rations. After winning a Pulitzer Prize as a reporter for a small Texas paper, he was offered a position in Washington, D.C., working for Senator John Tower, eventually becoming his chief of staff. During the Nixon and Ford presidencies, Towery served as deputy director for policy and plans at the United States Information Agency; President Reagan appointed him to the board of directors of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Except for his account of his wartime ordeal, Towery's memoir of his commendable public service is disappointingly lackluster. Photos.
