From the Publisher:
Robust health is, and should be, everyone's life-long goal. Written in easy-to- understand language, the book is for the person who wants to know how to reverse poor health and attain optimum health, using a simple, common-sense approach.
From the Author:
This book was written as a teaching tool for the purpose of educating both my patients and the lay public. When one understands how something works, then it is easy to do the right thing to keep it working properly. This concept applies to how the body works, as well as to keeping a car or house in working order. Three generations of my family have thrived using alternative (or complementary) approach to health. Good health is the foundation for all other things in life. My role is to educate the public so they can enjoy both health and all the wealth it brings. To illustrate my point, think for a moment about your car. If you're like most people, your car has an internal combustion engine. It requires a clean fuel line for the gas to flow into the carburetor. If there is an accumulation of dirt, sludge, and other foreign object blocking the flow of gas, your car will sputter and jerk its way down the road instead of gliding smoothly as it does when it can utilize all its fuel. If you allow this situation to go unattended, your poor car will eventually quit on you when you least expect it, like at 5:00 p.m. on the freeway. Troubles like this can be avoided if you take care to keep the car's fuel line clean and provide the car with the proper fuel it needs.

Although your body is certainly more sophisticated than any combustion engine, the principle remains the same. If you keep your fuel lines clean and provide your body with the nutrition it needs (instead of junk it doesn't want and can't use), you won't have to worry about your body quitting on you just when you need it to be functioning at its best.

One way to ensure that your body functions at its best is to combine a program of proper nutrition and basic structural health via chiropractic and/or other forms of therapy. Let's look at the relationship between nutrition and spinal alignment and see how they work to create a healthy, functioning body.

The body is dependent upon proper nerve supply in order to assimilate nutrients and to eliminate waste. Sufficient nerve supply to digestive organs and the musculo-skeletal system by means of spinal alignment will ensure the constant replenishing of nutrients to the cells via correct digestive function, which in turn supports and maintains the body's structural alignment. If the body is allowed to get out of alignment, the digestive organs and the muscles cannot function at full capacity. (Think back to what I said about sludge in your car's fuel line.)

Proper adjustment through spinal alignment allows the body's fuel lines (the circulatory system) to translocate nutrients and carry away waste. The circulatory system simply cannot do its job without proper nerve supply. When nerves are pinched, the stimulus directing the body is retarded. When the stimulus is retarded the organs and muscles are not getting the signal to function at full capacity.

Nerve tissue is composed of water, protein, minerals, compound lipids and cholesterol. Potassium and the fat-soluble "B" vitamins are essential for proper transmission of impulses along nerve pathways.

Micronutrients such as calcium (for contraction) and potassium and sodium (for relaxation) must be in the bloodstream and tissues ready for use as needed to maintain normal muscle action. If these elements are not available, the muscles become taut and cramped or lax and weak. Again, this situation can be avoided by supplying the body the nutrients it needs. Remember, the body actually wants to be functioning at its best. The body does not like junk food (only the taste buds respond to such stimuli and fool you into thinking the food is "good").

Connective tissue such as ligaments and tendons, which bind together and support the cells of other tissues, require chemical compounds made of water, minerals, lipids and proteins for both tensile strength (the ability to stretch without breaking) and resilience (the ability to return to shape and function). The mineral manganese is essential for strong ligamentous tissue. From the proceeding overview, you can see how you eat affects muscle elasticity, ligamentous strength, blood supply, and free nerve transmission. Obviously, if you adhere to proper nutrition, spinal adjustment will be easier and your body will be more receptive to realignment. It wants you to give it nutritious food and keep it aligned (just like you take your car in for a tune-up.

Even if you are giving your body the best fuel you can find, that fuel must be properly digested and assimilated for best results. If the digestive tract is healthy, the food and supplements are broken down by digestive juices into amino acids (derived from protein), vitamins, minerals, simple sugar and fatty acids. These are absorbed into the blood stream and from there into the tissues. If poorly functioning digestive organs are unable to produce the juices and enzymes necessary for digestion and assimilation, the protein, vitamin, mineral, sugar and fatty elements do not reach the various tissues. Gradually, tissue deprivation causes muscle and ligament weakness, reduced immune response, nervousness, glandular dysfunction with accompanying endocrine imbalances, increased digestive dysfunction and a host of other problems including mental and emotional disharmony. If you find yourself suffering from one or more of these symptoms, it is imperative that you take yourself in for a tune-up immediately. It is here that chiropractic care becomes paramount because it can rehabilitate the digestive tract (as well as other body parts) quickly and efficiently.

By releasing blocked nerve supply to the digestive organs and the small and large intestinal tract via spinal adjustment, juices and enzymes can once again be produced in normal amounts. Food will be digested into elemental form and assimilated while the body tissues receive the nutrients they require for proper function. It may be helpful to add appropriate digestive enzymes and acids to the diet during this rehabilitative stage to speed recovery.

In the next chapter, we'll take a closer look at how your body functions and how nutrition contributes to your well-being.
