Explains how banks work and tells how to shop for a bank, assess a bank's financial health, eliminate service charges, avoid bank lines, and negotiate for services

A consumer's banking relationship has changed over the past few years due primarily to de-regulation and technology: fees and service charges where none were before, automated teller machines, NOW accounts. Davidson's purpose is to "determine ways to save money, make wise deposits and gain a more favorable position when dealing with your bank." Among the topics covered: how to spot the telltale signs of a bank in trouble; selecting the right bank/ credit union/ savings & loan; comparison shopping for fees and services (e.g., safe-deposit, home loan, certified or travelers checks); what to do when an ATM malfunctions; and borrowing money. Except for detailing how much one can afford to borrow and therefore shop for comparative loan rates, this is a cursory survey with too much "pay your bills on time" advice. A bibliography would have been helpful. Index not seen.
