Compiled from John Newton's own notes and memoirs, this reproduction was meticulously recreated from an 1831 original text, detailing Newton's conversion from slave trader to fierce abolitionist.
Though his mother believed her son would be a minister one day, Newton chose a life of disobedience and immorality. As he fled the face of God, he became hardened in heart and reduced to a beggar. This angry man eventually rose to the rank of slave ship captain, one of the harshest livelihoods in history.
On a storm tossed sea, a near death experience drove him back to his boyhood faith. In less than 20 years, he became a respected man of trade and ultimately a priest who penned the words of the unforgettable hymn, “Amazing Grace,” pouring out his heart‘s cry to create a song that still resonates today. In his story of redemption, we find hope for those we love and for ourselves.

John Newton found himself the captain of a ship transporting slaves from Africa to England. On each journey, he mercilessly subjected hundreds to inhumane conditions only to be sold if they survived. But in a life-threatening storm, he cried out to God for help. Saved from imminent death, Newton soon realized he had also been saved from himself. Twenty years into his journey of knowing the grace and mercy of God, Newton penned Amazing Grace, unforgettable hymn of redemption.
The Life of John Newton is a biography that will inspire every man, woman and child. His spiritual transformation highlights the unstoppable force of God's love and unlimited grace regardless of one's own wretched history.
This Christian Classic was originally published in 1831 ASSU (American Sunday School Union). Attic Books, an imprint of New Leaf Publishing Group, meticulously reproduced each page. With tattered edged pages and a vintage cover, Life of John Newton is now an affordable, timeless classic is for a new generation interested in the foundations of our Christian heritage. It is one of Attic Books "Life of" series featuring biographies of heroes from the 18th century and beyond.
The ASSU, now called the American Missionary Fellowship (AMF), has been associated with some of America's most prominent citizens and religious leaders. ASSU missionaries carried books published by the mission in saddlebags to leave with the fledgling Sunday schools they had started, promoting literacy, education, and the very best in Christian moral values. Though it stopped publishing books in 1968, AMF continues its missionary work in the United States, extending beyond Sunday school work to include church planting, church camps, and numerous other programs.
