The 12-step program, developed over 50 years ago by Alcoholics Anonymous and adapted for other chemical dependencies and obsessive-compulsive disorders as well as sexual abuse, abortion, procrastination, and chronic pain, is now being applied to HIV infection. Living in Hope devotes one chapter to each step as it interweaves case studies and practical information to demonstrate the benefits of affirmation, visualization, meditation, and relaxation. Two additional chapters, addressed to significant others and to health-care providers, are followed by appendixes including lists of readings and resources, scripts for making imagery tapes, and practical suggestions for starting a meeting. The Caregiver's Journey explores the often-related dynamics of codependency, chemical dependency, and AIDS. Three separate stories illustrate how friends and family can use the basic principles of the 12-step program to achieve acceptance. Both titles are valuable resources recommended for all public libraries.
