A reluctant first grader, Willard Collins spent much of his life in education. Working with young people at David Lipscomb College has always been considered by this native of Marshall County, Tennessee to be his greatest work. Joining the school in 1943 as associate director of the Lipscomb Expansion Program, he served twenty-seven years as vice president before accepting the presidency of the school in 1977, a position he held until retirement in 1986.
Collins entered David Lipscomb College in 1934, the same year he began preaching at Farmington, Tennessee. Public speaking was an early calling, often representing his high school in Lewisburg in oratorical contests. Soon his booming voice became the trademark of one of the outstanding evangelists among churches of Christ. In demand as an evangelist, Collins has held revivals across the breadth of the United States. In the 1960s he was the outstanding evangelist in area-wide campaigns. Well over 10,000 persons have responded to his preaching.
Whether as an educator or as an evangelist, the strength of Willard Collins has always been his special relationships with people. He remains in 1986 a people person, a friend to everyone.
