Michael J. Marquardt, Ph.D., is professor of human resource development at George Washington University as well as president of Global Learning Associates. His nearly thirty years of consulting experience include work with such clients as Marriott, the Peace Corps, Arthur Andersen, Singapore Airlines, and the governments of Indonesia and Jamaica. He is the author of numerous books and articles in the field of management and organization development, including Building the Learning Organization, winner of the 1996 Book of the Year Award from the Academy of Human Resource Development.
A quiet revolution of creativity, innovation, and fresh new thinking is sweeping across the corporate landscape, changing the approach successful leaders are taking to staying on top of change. After languishing for nearly fifty years within the confines of academic study and in a few select international organizations, action learning--a powerful problem-solving strategy for organizational learning, team building, leadership development, and personal growth and career development--finally comes of age in this first-of-its-kind how-to guide for building corporate learning and success. In this long-awaited volume, Michael Marquardt brings together step-by-step guidance and the personal accounts of frontline managers to show how to create and implement an action learning program in any organization. Copublished with the American Society for Training and Devleopment, Action Learning in Action uses solid research results and extensive real-world examples to make the critical connection between action learning and organizational learning. Lessons from such global leaders as McKinsey & Company, General Electric, Bristol-Myers Squibb, and Arthur Andersen demonstrate how to leverage the benefits of action learning. With realistic advice, practical wisdom, and such hands-on tools as checklists and a comprehensive glossary of terms, Marquardt details the six elements of successful action learning programs. He adresses all aspects of design, implementation, and assessment, including the important facilitator role and the special needs of organizations with multicultural workforces.
