Just as IQ is shorthand for mental intelligence, and EQ refers to emotional intelligence, Stephen Dent describes and defines PQ, or partnering intelligence, and identifies the attitudes, skills, competencies, and actions needed to create long-term healthy partnerships based on trust and mutual benefits.

Stephen M. Dent, founding partner of the Minneapolis-based consulting firm The Partnership Continuum, Inc., is an award-winning organizational consultant specializing in developing internal and strategic partnerships. Through workshops, speeches, and nearly twenty years of experience working with such clients as AT&T, Northwest Airlines, GE Capital Services, the U.S. Postal Service, and USWest Communications, he has trained thousands of managers, executives, and consultants in the benefits of partnering intelligence.
With the increasing need of corporations for effective and efficient partnerships both internally and externaly, Dent offers his theories on how to build smart alliances. We learn that partnering is a process of giving, investing, contributing, and combining what we have in order to create synergistic results. Success in partnering is totally dependent on the people involved and their interaction. The book uses questionnaires, diagrams, self-assessments, and case studies and is divided into three sections. The first section is devoted to the readers and evaluates their partnering intelligence. The second section offers a partnering model called the partnership continuum, a scientific process for creating and strengthening partnering abilities. The final section is devoted to enhancing partnering skills. Dent's key requirements for a successful partnership include active support of leaders; appropriate team membership with equal participation; common objectives; and trust and mutual benefits. The author is the founding partner of a consulting firm specializing in partnering techniques; hence, this book serves as an infomercial for its activities. Mary Whaley
