Reviews

Most books that address the topic of organizational change do so from the point of view of management, focusing on how to implement change and deal with its effects. Those books that do discuss change from an individual's perspective usually advise ways to cope with various life-stage transitions. Garber, however, has put together this self-assessment manual that targets those facing change in the workplace. The author of 101 Stupid Things Supervisors Do to Sabotage Success (1997) suggests that those "who have been most successful in their careers are often those who have been most receptive to change." He explains how people react to change, analyzes the psychology of change, identifies tactics for anticipating change, and looks at the "politics" of change. Garber also lays out strategies for making choices required when change takes place. The main feature of Garber's guide is 27 questionnaires and exercises designed to encourage self-awareness and spark insight. David Rouse
