Following a fictional bookstore's distribution center through the process, the book offers a rare combination of solid theory and dozens of field-tested diagnostic tools, care study dialogue and reproducible exercises and worksheets to measure the collaborative give and take, the exchange value between work teams and the core stakeholders: customers, employers and owners.

Rod Napier pioneered the concept of 360-degree feedback and performance hiring during a successful forty-year career as teacher and international consultant, working with such leading organizations as the United Nations, Merck, and CBS. He is author or coauthor of a dozen books, including "Groups: Theory and Experience," the seminal text in the field of group dynamics, and "The Courage to Act." Formerly a professor at Temple University, he currently teaches in the graduate program of organizational dynamics at the University of Pennsylvania.
Rich McDaniel is an author, an e-business entrepreneur, and Vice-President, Campus and Business Services at Cornell University. A former president of the National Association of College Stores, he is also cofounder of Retail Alliance, Inc., a firm working to organize large college bookstores into a "virtual chain," and collaborator with Xerox in the development of on-demand printing solutions. He is recognized as a master teacher of new management practices.
Put the Power of Metrics to Work in Teams--the Front Line That Creates the Bottom Line in Business
Finally, a simple yet powerful action-packed tool kit that cuts through the complexities of metrics and brings the power of measurement to where the real work gets done: inside work teams. MEASURING WHAT MATTERS, copublished with ASQ Quality Press, delivers the tools and techniques to put numbers and analysis to work in any team--from HR to IT, engineering to customer service--to achieve purpose, improve processes, serve people, and, ultimately, create value for the organization.
"In MEASURING WHAT MATTERS, Napier and McDaniel live out their vision of bringing simple, commonsense tools to work teams so that the value of all parties is enhanced. A book not to be missed!" --Ken Blanchard, coauthor, "The One-Minute Manager(R)"
"I have watched this material develop. It is sound insightful, and innovative. It is a truism that 'the front line delivers the bottom line.' This book shows you how." --Robert C. Camp, Ph.D., PE, Principal, Best Practice Institute(TM)
"Napier and McDaniel are to be commended. They provide a simple solution to enhance the ROI of our #1 asset--staff. MEASURING WHAT MATTERS truly matters." --Brian E. Cartier, CEO, National Association of College Stores
Whether diagnosing problems or measuring trust, the ongoing challenge is finding the right method for keeping score in business. Despite such innovations as balanced scorecards and Six Sigma, many frontline managers, team leaders, and human resource professionals struggle to find a simpler way to bring the power of numbers to work teams.
MEASURING WHAT MATTERS demystifies the use of metrics, cuts through the confusion, and lays out a straightforward yet powerful process that translates organizational vision into measures, and measures into action. Immediately actionable at the team level, independent of outside consultants or company-wide commitment, this dynamic tool kit introduces the notion of balanced stakeholder feedback as it details how to identify a team's key stakeholders, determine what each core group values and expects, and assess how well the team and stakeholders meet each other's expectations.
Napier and McDaniel deliver a rare combination of useful theory and proven methods to help teams gather measurable information, case studies to understand the data, and dozens of original diagnostic tools, including:
* A 360-degree feedback tool to assess leadership competencies * A Group Management Questionnaire to help identify benchmarks and priorities * A two-way dialogue instrument to assist in clarifying stakeholder expectations
