From the Back Cover

Explore the space between power and influence--what it means to be an effective executive leader.

This insightful book brings together the science and the practice of leadership to examine how today's C-level executives are wrestling with what effective executive leadership is and how it affects organizational success. UNBALANCED INFLUENCE explores how the personality preferences, interpersonal interactions, individual characteristics, and leadership competencies of executive leaders shape the way they view creativity and innovation, decision making, power and influence, values and ethics, and work-life balance. And dozens of examples--including the "failure of initiative" that characterized the leadership response to Hurricane Katrina--illustrate what it takes to harness the creative and innovative energies needed to bring the paradoxes of effective leadership back into balance.

"Consistent, impactful leadership is a struggle. By dissecting this challenge, Hammett shows the way and calls us to our very best, ethical leadership." --Paul J. Bonitatibus, senior executive vice president, Capital One, N.A.

From the Inside Flap

With nearly unprecedented access to ten years of research results and knowledge from the Leadership at the Peak program of the Center for Creative Leadership (CCL), Pete Hammett explores in depth the basic principles--including the myths and paradoxes--of effective executive leadership: what its influencers are and how these interact, how it can best be evaluated, and how it affects organizational success.

* Is an effective executive's decision making based on values or only on results?

* Can an effective leader be simultaneously grounded in day-to-day business objectives and focused on future opportunities?

* Can effective leadership be measured solely by performance metrics? Or does performance need to encompass a "greater good"?

* What influence does an executive really exert in the effectiveness of the organization's endeavors?

UNBALANCED INFLUENCE pulls together sound empirical data, including results from such pioneering tools as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and FIRO-B instruments, CCL's Executive Dimentions assessment, and both the Campbell Leadership Index and Campbell Organizational Survey assessments. Rich insights from the real-life experiences of CCL participants offer valuable life lessons for C-level executives as they strive to define what is--and is not--effective executive leadership.
