Newlyweds Tap and Pepper face unexpected challenges when they have to leave their ranch and move to Cheyenne, where Tap reluctantly takes on the role of marshall while worrying about Pepper's declining health

Having lost their ranch in Colorado to creditors, cow rustler Tap Andrews and his new wife, Pepper Paige, settle in Cheyenne, Wyoming. Tap works as a deputy marshal but is soon elevated to acting marshal when the marshal is killed. Tap has his hands full trying to bring law and order to a frontier town peopled with corrupt politicians, hungry gold seekers, and angry cattle drivers. While Tap brings integrity and righteousness to his job, he also brings a quick temper that often lands him in trouble. Tap's frequent references to God and his spiritual life are sometimes out of character and hard to believe, but, otherwise, Bly (Where the Deer and the Antelope Play, LJ 9/1/95) offers a kinder, gentler Western that should appeal to fans of Louis L'Amour. Recommended where Bly's books are popular.
