The third volume in Davis's "Valley of the Peacemaker" series (after The Proving Ground, Crossway, 1996) focuses on law man (and new Christian) Matthew Page, who is reluctantly holding down the job of sheriff while his father-in-law recovers from an injury. To his dismay, his quiet life is shattered when the body of an Indian man is found in the rubble of a burned building. With numerous subplots vying for the reader's attention, it is to Davis's credit that the book works. Fast-moving and entertaining, it should prove popular with Western fans.
