This reference work is an unequivocal purchase for all libraries with any art instruction books to speak of. Rulon, both an artist and a photographer, has provided more than 500 quality photographs of 43 different birds. In two sections, one for water birds and one for land birds, he displays a large primary photo for each bird, with additional photos from several angles, close-ups of feathers and feet, and each bird in its natural habitat. He offers four demos (in acrylic, watercolor, and oil) and information on habitat, feeding, and physical characteristics to assist the artist in creating realistic images. This volume complements Gary Greene's The Artist's Photo Reference Guide to Flowers (North Light, 1998). Both are essential for artists, decorative painters, carvers, and crafters.
