About the Author
Rachel Rubin Wolf is a freelance writer and editor. She is the author of Acrylic Painter's Book of Styles & Techniques and Painting Ships, Shores and the Sea. She is also the project editor for the Splash watercolor series, The Best of Wildlife Art 1 and 2, The Best of Portrait Painting and The Best of Flower Painting 2, as well as many of North Light's Basic Techniques series paperbacks.

This is another in Wolf's excellent "Keys to Painting" series (see Keys to Painting: Faces and Figures, reviewed below). Houses, shops, and villages all have a pull on the human heart; this book is the most comprehensive look yet at the myriad ways of painting the places where we live, pray, and work. Using a broad variety of examples from contemporary artists like George Kountoupis and Tony Couch, Wolf opens by covering drawing and perspective, composition, and color harmony. In the latter, richer half of the book, she looks at building textures (brick in watercolor, sandstone in mixed media, weathered wood in pencil or oil), and provides more than a dozen demonstrations in watercolor, acrylic, and oils.
