Amos has been out of print for close to fourteen years and yet it has not been forgotten. We have received countless requests for the novel over the years, and now we are extremely pleased to bring out this gorgeous trade paperback edition of the enduring novel. The story was produced as a CBS Movie of the Week featuring Kirk Douglas as Amos with Elizabeth Montgomery as Daisy Daws. Supporting actors included Dorothy McGuire, Pat Morita, Ray Ralston and Fred Coffin. The movie received four Emmy nominations, one for story. The book and film sparked a national controversy over the treatment of the aged in America.
Sunset Home was based on a county rest home in Montana in the midsixties where the residents were often treated in the manner depicted in the novel. Many of the characters are based on real people who, without family or friends or funds, were trapped there at the end of their lives. In the midseventies the place was bulldozed into the ground after the Daisylike head nurse had skipped town. No one was ever indicted or charged with any crime in connection with the operation of that institution.
Besides wanting to write a page-turning, suspenseful and entertaining book, laced with much humor and irony and truth, I especially wanted to honor those nameless and forgotten people who lived out their final days and died in that heartless and inhumane representative of our society.
