No fewer than 109 color and 162 black-and-white illustrations accompany the text.

A pleasant book designed for browsing, this collection of artwork created on Maine's Monhegan Island features work from the 1850s to the present. The remote island's stark beauty has attracted both professional and amateur artists. Here, over 150 artists are included, ranging from self-taught locals to such well-known masters as Rockwell Kent, Edward Hopper, and N.C., Andrew, and Jamie Wyeth. Each reproduction, arranged by subject matter (woodlands, harbor, etc.), is accompanied by a brief paragraph of explanation or commentary. This book will appeal to general readers, particularly those with an interest in maritime art or the New England region.
