After growing up in New Jersey, Pamela Love graduated from BucknellUniversity in Pennsylvania. She worked as a teacher and in marketingbefore turning to writing. She's the author of several other picturebooks: A Loon Alone, A Cub Explores, A Moose's Morning, and Lighthouse Seeds, all published by Down East Books, and Brigid and the Butter, published by Pauline Books and Media. She has also written an easy reader, Two Feet Up, Two Feet Down, published by Scholastic Children's Books. Her poems, stories, and plays have appeared in such children's magazines as Highlights for Children, Cricket, and Plays: The Drama Magazine for Young People. One of her stories appears in the anthology Family Matters: Thirteen Short Stories, which is also published by Pauline Books and Media. She lives with her family in Maryland.
Kindergarten-Grade 2 - This brief picture book follows a mother black bear and her baby through a summer afternoon as the cub learns about friends, foes, and food. They play in a cool brook, forage for food, meet a variety of other animals, and settle down for the night. The color-pencil illustrations are realistic, though the cub's size is a bit inconsistent. Unfortunately, the text is sometimes choppy, and there is little sense of excitement or humor in the writing. For simple factual stories about bear cubs, try a photo-essay such as Aubrey Lang's The Adventures of Baby Bear (Fitzhenry & Whiteside, 2001) or an easy reader like Joyce Milton's Bears Are Curious (Random, 1998) instead. - Susan Oliver, Tampa-Hillsborough Public Library System, FL
