Synopsis
Annabel's dad has an unusual planter in his yard, which is actually an old sailboat that he hopes to fix up. One day Annabel climbs in, pulls out all the weeds, and yells, Boat! From that point on, Annabel's future is set, and through hard work and self-reliance, she eventually works her way up on various kinds of boats to become captain of her own tugboat.

About the Author
Neal Parker gew up sailing the waters of New England and has been devoted to traditional sailing craft since he built his first boat model. He is captain of a 67-foot schooner that he restored and charters out of Rockland, Maine.

PreSchool-Grade 4–In this father/daughter story, which takes place by the sea, Annabel grows from four years old to adulthood. In the beginning, she and Papa work together to fix up an old sailboat, which he names after her. He is her first teacher, instructing her on water safety and sailing. When Annabel turns 18, she moves on, and the jobs she takes on several different vessels allow her to travel the world and learn more about the ocean and boating. However, she misses her father and ultimately returns home as captain of a tugboat, which she names Papa. The colorful paintings have a folk-art quality that complements the text. The characters age in the pictures but are still recognizable. Detail-oriented readers can look for the many cats in Annabel's life.
