The area was once a shipbuilding and farming hamlet that became a Gilded Age resort of the highest order-until a fire in 1947 destroyed many of its buildings. About the Author
Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr., is the Maine State Historian. He became interested in historic preservation at the age of 13, when Union Station in Portland, Maine, was torn down to make way for a strip mall. He holds degrees from Colby College and Boston University.
