Synopsis
Background to the Bible meets the Christian's need for a balanced, non-technical, popularly written guide to an informed reading of Scripture. Richard T. A. Murphy, the noted Dominican Scripture scholar, takes an approach to the Bible Which avoids the extremes of both fundamentalism and modernism. He introduces the reader to the culture of biblical times, examines the processes that brought the Bible into being, evaluates the approaches and accomplishments of Scripture scholars, and studies the relationship between the Bible and reason, science, and history. Fr. Richard T.A. Murphy is a respected Scripture scholar and author. He holds the doctorate in Theology from the University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome and the doctorate in Sacred Scripture from the Pontifical Biblical Commission. He is a graduate of the Ecole Biblique et Archeologique in Jerusalem. Fr. Murphy was the translator of Isaiah 13-66 in The New American Bible and has also contributed articles to the Jerome Biblical Commentary and The New Catholic encyclopedia. His books include The Passion of Christ and The Work of Pere Lagrange.
