Excerpt from the Foreword: I am alive today because my grandparents survived the Charleston earthquake of August 31, 1886. On this 100th anniversary of the great quake, my hope is that this book will help us learn from the past. This book contains a collection of stories passed down through five Low Country generations, recorded news articles, interviews with people who lived through the earthquake, letters written during the two weeks after the disaster, and other records that people have shared. The seriousness of the earthquake should not be ignored, but neither should the misconceptions, myths, humorous incidents, and related aspects.
