The latest addition to the now-massive Masterplots sets describes 760 poems from 275 poets who wrote over the past 1300 years. Brief entries effectively summarize and analyze many important poems, such as "Lycidas," "The Windhover," and "Birches," that are frequently assigned to high school and lower-level college students. They will learn a lot from these volumes, though advanced students will need more than this work seeks to provide. The appendixes include a bibliography of book-length studies on many of the authors included, but most readers requiring additional criticism will be better served by the studies of individual poems accessed through such sets as Poetry Explication (G.K. Hall, 1980) or Literary Criticism Index ( LJ 11/1/84). However, this expensive set is one of the most useful in the series and is certainly an important purchase for libraries committed to the Masterplots concept.
