Heim is honored by his UCLA colleagues and others for his contributions to Czech studies and translations of works by Capek, Kundera, Havel, et al. Cravens (Slavic and Eurasian Studies, U. of Texas at Austin) introduces Heim's contributions to the areas of the teaching of Czech language and culture, study of Czech as a heritage language in the US, Czech literature and its cultural contexts, and translation studies in general. The 31 essays include a Czech Texan writing about her ethnolinguistic identities, and an analysis of B. Hrabal's short story Kafkárna (which really means more than Kafkaesque ).
