Book by Burns, Amy Stechler

Yet another study of Shakerism in America has been published. The material culture of this Christian, communal, and celibate sect is apparently a never-ending source of fascination for art book lovers. The text of the present work is well written and the period photographs of these people and their surroundings are immediate and moving. Ironically, the weakest component is the modern photography. This relatively slim general survey is thorough and attractive but pales in comparison with June Sprigg and David Larkin's more comprehensive and lavish Shaker: life, work and art ( LJ 11/15/87). Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Ken Burns, Langdon Clay,Jerome Liebling (illustrator). 1st Edition. This wonderful book about the shakers and their life style. To quote 91 year old Eldress Bertha Lindsay, at the time of this writing, " We are simple people who believe in Christ. Like all good Christians everywhere, if we live by his teachings we are good people and good Shakers. The physical aspects of Shakerism may disappear, but the life of dedication will always be here, and the principles of Shakerism will go on forever." Canterbury, New hampshire 1986. This book is beautifully photographed and tries to explain the mysteries that make up the Shaker philosophy of diligence, unity in work and the perfection in simplicity. It is a biography of a group of people using their own words and their own histories. " Are you free as you are? Are you in any degree bound by your appetites, your passions, your self-will? Are you at all in bondage to the opinion of your neighbors and notions of society, however harmful or absurd? These do not trammel( impeded or deter) the true Shaker" Eldress Anna White, 1904 Book is in fine condition quarter bound in blue cloth over boards with gilt spine lettering. There is slight rubbing at the extremities. The priced (40.00) jacket is near fine with wear to the extremities. This is not only a beautiful book but a very iteresting read.
