This version of the Aztec songs is an exciting addition to both poetry in general and to Native American studies. Though fragments of Aztec songs translated by William Carlos Williams and Stephen Berg and others have appeared, this present collection of 37 poems condenses the repetitive chant-like nature of the songs to their inner sense; lyrical, but reflective of the thrust of the entire text of the original.
Translations of Professor John Bierhorst provide examples of scholarly texts for Nancy Arbuthnot's incisive renderings. Also included here is a Guide to Pronunciation and Glossary of Aztec terms, and a Selected Bibliography.
