Synopsis

There's no doubt about it: Kids love to bake! They take to it like peach crisp and cream, like apples and muffins, like honey and spices, like all the many happy combinations in this very special collection of baking recipes.

These 50 kid-tested recipes are clearly written and easy-to-bake for children 6 and up. All are accompanied by gleefully drawn two-color, step-by-step illustrations by Tedd Arnold. And there are two 16-page full-color sections featuring treats for the holidays and other special occasions. Liberally sprinkled throughout are tidbits of food facts (Did you know those Georgia peaches originally came from China?).

Here is Oatmeal and Nut Streusel to liven up the family breakfast. Indian Pudding Pie to serve as a special Thanksgiving dessert. Fudge Sticks to take on a summer picnic, and Moon Cookies to share with a friend.

Complete with a full chapter on kitchen safety and proper use of kitchen utensils, plus plenty of recipes using whole grains and fruit juice sweeteners to bake up yummy and nutritiously sound, My First Baking Book is a must for all young chefs.

Selection of the Children's Book-of-the-Month Club and the Quality Paperback Book Club. Suitable for Ages 6-10. 152,000 copies in print.

SWEET-TALK FROM BIALOSKY:

"When I was growing up, we weren't as concerned about the amount of sugar we ate as we are today. So I've reduced the amounts traditionally used in all these recipes and have still kept their good old-fashioned taste. Now my friends and I can have a cookie or two without thinking about how much sugar is in them."

Rena Coyle, a former professional pastry chef, teaches children's cooking classes and is the author of My First Cookbook and Baby Let's Eat! She tested each of the original recipes in this book with her five-year-old daughter Catelyn.

Biolosky is an invaluable right-hand bear for every young baker. (He especially likes helping with the Honey 'n' Spice Bits.)

Reviews

Grade 3-5 Regardless of the title and the fact that this book purports to be especially for children age 6 and up, these 50 very good recipes are not for beginners. There is much use of the electric mixer and blender, separation of eggs, and folding in of stiffly beaten egg whites. The organization is strange: in addition to breakfast foods and cookies, there are sections such as "Bearing Gifts" and "Holiday Specials," whose contents are a melange of more cookies, cakes, etc., rendering the section headings meaningless. The directions are clear and include safety instructions, and the recipes are varied and imaginative: cream puffs, baked Alaska, graham crackers, soft pretzels, and many more. The sugar content is not excessive, yogurt and other healthy foods are often used, and no packaged mixes are included. Instructive drawings accompany each step of preparation, and there is an index.
