Reviews

Grade 3-6 The over 50 recipes in this well thought-out cookbook range from simple and classic nachos to a unique and more complex manicotti. They are arranged in mealtime groupingsbreakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks, dessert and special occasions. The opening instructions stress safety and explain some cooking procedures, such as separating an egg and kneading dough. Recipes requiring the use of electrical equipment or the stove are noted, and adult supervision is suggested. The directions are clear and use terminology appropriate to the age level. They also do not assume any previous kitchen knowledge, and even suggest the use of hotpads where appropriate. The list of ingredients and utensils needed are highly visible in a colored box. Preparation and cooking times are visually displayed on a clock face. The Teddy bear drawings that appear throughout may, at first glance, make the book look inappropriate for the age group, but they add appeal, and there are many other small, informative illustrations. Other pluses include the use of healthy ingredients, such as whole wheat flour and alfalfa sprouts, and tips about possible substitutions, storage and serving ideas. There is always a need for a good cookbook, especially one containing recipes children would actually want to make and eat, and this one fills the bill. Karen K. Radtke, Milwaukee Public Lib .
