Grade 5-9 Gay offers a fascinating look at how products can be better designed to suit people's use of them. After defining the term ergonomics and its principles, she uses numerous examples to show the concept's applications to industrial and office settings; to consumers' needs, as demonstrated by product packaging, pay phones, cameras, and autos; to the problems presented by signs and messages; to designs of buildings and playgrounds that keep users' needs in in mind. The importance of ergonomics in the space program and its spinoffs and the ways in which this science can offer help to the handicapped are covered. The book closes with a study of the tools and methods of ergonomists. Illustrations are worthwhile, though not exceptional; however, the text is eminently readable and Ergonomics is, as a result, an excellent introduction to the topic. Jeffrey A.
