Grade 4-6-- An introduction to the animals, plants, and people of the world's deserts and the impact of continuing desertification on them. The book's unique feature is its description of specific deserts in detail: location, temperature range, precipitation, land forms, flora, and fauna. The text is well written and logically organized; however, the black-and-white photographs, drawings, and diagrams do little to enhance the narrative or to capture the beauty and drama of these deserts. Keith Lye's Deserts (Silver Burdett, 1987) and Martyn Bramwell's Deserts (Watts, 1988) are complementary and more attractively illustrated titles for slightly younger audiences. --Renee Blumenkrantz, Davis Community Library, Bethesda, MD
