In this entry in the Collective Biographies series, Camp presents ten American astronomers whose observations and theories changed the way people view the universe, in biographical sketches that span two centuries and provide a chronological look at the evolution of astronomy as a science in the US. For each scientist--Annie Jump Cannon, Williamina Fleming, George Ellery Hale, Edwin Hubble, Percival Lowell, Maria Mitchell, Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin, Carl Sagan, Harlow Shapley, and Vera Rubin--the author provides information on family life, education, discoveries, career, and contributions to the field. Especially effective are brief quotes from the writings of the subjects themselves, demonstrating fierce dedication, persistence, joy, and purpose. Some readers may find the discoveries and theories discussed are a bit technical (there is no glossary) but they will be drawn in by the fervor of these astronomers for their work. Grade 6-9?Each of these volumes profiles 10 memorable leaders. Astronomers features five men and five women, including Maria Mitchell and Carl Sagan. Women in America's Wars starts with Mary Hays (better remembered as Molly Pitcher) and ends with Pamela Davis Dorman, the first female U.S. Navy Chaplain to serve with the Marines. In American Heroes, Matthew Henson and Robert Peary are given equal credit for discovering the North Pole. Amelia Earhart, Jacqueline Cochran, Sally Ride, and Christa McAuliffe are the women covered. Each bio is 8-10 pages long and provides the most engaging highlights of the person's life, beginning with an exciting event to capture readers' interest. Enough background history is included to make the subjects' accomplishments significant to modern readers. Black-and-white photographs enhance the clearly written texts, and chapter notes and indexes will help report writers. Solid additions.?Sandra L. Doggett, Urbana High School, Walkersville, MD
