Reviews

Grade 7 Up-This slim volume attempts to cover a very complex topic, and does it well. A lot of thought has gone into the text, taking readers step-by-step through the process of developing a racist mind set. The emphasis is on black/white racial problems, but other groups are also discussed. Sentence structure is simple, with a few grammatical or typographical exceptions. Black-and-white captioned photos and etchings are included, as are chapter notes and an up-to-date list for further reading. Susan S. Lang's Extremist Groups in America (Watts, 1990) is a more in-depth treatment, as is Elaine Landau's The White Power Movement (Millbrook, 1993). John J. Langone's Spreading Poison (Little, 1993) covers much of the same material but devotes a chapter each to Native Americans, immigrants, and "other outsiders." With the plethora of books available, Newman's title is supplementary. It will appeal to reluctant readers who need report information.
