Reviews

Gr 6-9--Straightforward series entries illustrated with black-and-white photos and reproductions that vary in quality. Hermann details the life of the Apache leader from his rise to leadership within his tribe to his death at 85. This well-documented account follows the young man named Goyahkla who became known as Geronimo and led his people in their long and desperate fight for peace and freedom. Even though Geronimo recognized defeat by U.S. troops and accepted captivity, he remained a leader and prospered in his later years. Schleichert presents an objective and generally clear portrait of the man best known for his role in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Like Geronimo, Sitting Bull distinguished himself as a warrior who became a trusted and admired leader and holy man. The author explains Sitting Bull's reasons for participating in "Buffalo Bill" Cody's Wild West Show. While other books about these Native American leaders are available, these two titles are serviceable additions for pleasure reading and reports.
