Public health depends chiefly upon the dietary followed by the mass of the people. The ills which carry off human beings to their graves have their principal source in badly chosen food. Improvement of the race will never be brought about as a result of individual campaigns simply directed against chronic infections such as tuberculosis, syphilis, cancer, or against acute diseases like typhoid fever and diphtheria. So long as people continue to feed on impure or unnatural products, there cannot fail to be a growing deficiency of vital living and accelerated organic wear and tear. So long as official institutions concentrate their efforts on a struggle against the diseases which are the result of disobedience to the laws of nature instead of against the disobedience itself which is the real cause of ill health, they will never do more than satisfy material interests and personal ambition.
