Grade 5-9-Three short hi/lo fiction selections, each featuring a different sport to focus on a problem. Bat Boy deals with prejudice and the problems of being physically different. Eighth-grade Elliot Greeley, new in town, is four feet, six inches tall. A new friend, Mike, convinces the other boys to accept Elliot on their baseball team. Elliot has trouble hitting and fielding, but everyone is impressed with his eagerness and unwillingness to quit. Flipper's Boy offers the best story and character development. Centered around basketball, it focuses on Tommy Mandell, a high school basketball player who has to develop his own style to elude the shadow of his famous estranged father. Tommy is a likable and believable character who is guided by a supportive coach. Muscle Bound uses boxing to highlight the actions of a bully. Unfortunately, Bobby Saxon is a stereotypical character who picks on the younger boys and plays to an audience of impressed followers. In the end, he learns that showing off is not the way to become a champion. Krych's pen-and-ink illustrations capture the moods nicely. In all three titles, the plot and the character development are fairly predictable. Nonethless, they are all fast paced, easy to read, and meet a distinct need.
