Grade 3-7?Cain, Abel, Isaac, Rebecca, Rachel, Leah, Joseph, Elijah, and Esther are only some of the many names missing from the Hebrew Scripture selections in this volume. The Christian Testament section omits the Good Samaritan, the Prodigal Son, Doubting Thomas, and Saul/Paul, among others. The brief text is dull and sometimes confusing (without the Joseph story, how do you explain the presence of Moses and the Israelites in Egypt?). Much space is occupied by Wensell's illustrations. They are competent, but seldom rise above the predictable, and bright colors alone fail to guarantee interest. Ann Pilling's The Kingfisher Children's Bible (Kingfisher, 1993), illustrated by Kady McDonald Denton, is comparable in length, format, and reading level, but far superior in coverage, style (literary and graphic), comprehensibility, and artistic merit. Denton's watercolor vignettes pack more liveliness and originality into their multiple small spaces than Wensell generates in many square inches.
