Dr. Stoppard has written a clear and thorough dictionary-style reference guide in straightforward, nonmedical language. Each entry in the alphabetical listing of common childhood complaints and illnesses contains a complete definition, advice on what to do, when to consult a physician, and what the physician is likely to do. Preceding the A to Z listing is an excellent guide to the anatomy of a child and tips for caring for a sick child. Also included is a very useful section on safety at home and on the road, plus a critical chapter on first aid including CPR techniques. This excellent, easy-to-use handbook is a fine complement to the more medically technical revised Encyclopedia of Baby and Child Care (Prentice Hall, 1981) by Dr. Lendon Smith. Highly recommended. A section on caring for sick children covers everything from taking their temperatures to keeping them busy when they are bedridden. "Visual diagnosis guides" present detailed drawings of parts of the body, designed to help a parent identify symptoms of ailments or illnesses. The bulk of Stoppard's book is devoted to a comprehensive alphabetical listing of complaints, which includes descriptions of the conditions and their causes, and recommended remedies. Tips for home and car safety and directions for administering first aid round out this extremely worthwhile volume. Its strong visuals and concise explanations and directions make it easier to use than many books on the subject.
